The Hoodoo News #3 (November 2003)

Greetings all Hoodoo Papas fans:

This is the third installment of our monthly communiqué all about the Hoodoo Papas. Please let us know if you like it. If you do, forward it to your friends and invite them to join our fan club. Just log onto www.mojohat.com and follow the buttons. Or send an email to tworicks@hoodoopapas.com .

Important Info: All email addresses we collect absolutely stay with the Hoodoo Papas. We will never sell, give, loan, or share your personal information with anyone, truly, never. If you do not want to receive the newsletter, just reply to this email with "remove" in the subject line.

Just to catch y'all up on what's happened in Hoodoo Land last month, we had a real fun time in El Dorado, Arkansas, for the Music Fest. It was a beautiful, sunny day. We ran into our old friends from Murfreesboro there, David and Jeff. We also got a chance to hear Jeff Guerin's band. More on him later. The crowd was great and the debut of our coffee, Hoodoo Brew, was a big success. Thanks Cane River Roasters for creating a special blend of arabica Columbian and Brazilian beans just for the Hoodoo Papas. You can order many special coffees directly from them at http://www.caneriverroasters.com/. Also, the El Dorado crowd got the first shot at our new T-shirts. Both items are going fast, so don't miss out. I'll give more information on how to get yours in a sec.

The Red River Revel in Shreveport, Louisiana, was a hit as always. Another good crowd and our friends, Sonny and Jan, were there to give us inspiration. Thanks, y'all. We also got to hear another fun band, The Drama Club, featuring our friend Julianne Banks. If you want to hear some really good '80s rock, you gotta go see them in Shreveport.

On the next weekend, we played for a group of airplane collectors and pilots, the Bianca Club, who were in Natchitoches for a weekend tour. I don't know what you might expect from pilots, but these people knew how to party. They filled the club at the Ramada Inn. The hotel had to bring in extra chairs so people could have a place to sit. We had a really fun time. We were helped by our buddies Brian Basco on fiddle and James Wagley on bass. We also got a chance to record the show so a "live" Hoodoo Papas cd is in the process of final mixdown and mastering. This show "Almost Live" will be available before Christmas.

The Frontier Days Festival in Leesville, Louisiana, is the major fundraiser for the Museum of West Louisiana. Thanks to our good friend, Mary Cleveland, the 'Papas were invited to perform. The museum in housed in the old train station and the festival is held nearby. Along with fun, food, and music fans, the trains pass by about every half hour. That added some interesting special effects to our music and made the "Train Song" a real big hit.

On October 28th, Arkansas celebrated the introduction of the Arkansas Quarter-you know, the 25 cent piece. Representatives from the U. S. Mint were there along with the Governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee. It turns out that the governor has a band, the Capitol Offense, and he plays bass guitar. The Jennings-Osborne family provided free barbeque for all festival attendees just before a big fireworks show. Needless to say, everyone in Arkansas turned out for the celebration, along with three Louisiana boys, the Hoodoo Papas helped again by Brian Basco. We played our set, filled our stomachs with about 3 pounds of excellent B-B-Q and listened to the music by the governor and our Arkansas buddy Jeff Guerin www.jeffguerin.info. Y'all have to check out his new cd. He wrote the songs, played lead guitar, rhthym guitar, bass, drums, and did all the vocals. Jeff's music is a fun blend of Allman Brothers and Santana. This is a cd you must hear. Check him out on CD Baby. www.cdbaby.com/jeffguerin.

Between all of these fun times, we have been in the studio putting the final touches on our next cd. It's overdue, so we are calling the cd "Past Due." With just a little more work this month it will be finished and available the first of December just in time for Christmas. Wow, two releases from the 'Papas at the same time!

Both cds, "Almost Live" and "Past Due," along with our other stuff, Hoodoo Brew coffee, t-shirts, and our other cds, "Back Porch Blues" and "Mojo Hat" are now available online through our affiliation with the Louisiana Market. You can log onto our page and order all of the Hoodoo Papa merchandise and even charge the order to your credit card. The folks at Louisiana Market will ship your order immediately. Check out their web page www.louisianamarket.com for many other great Louisiana items for Christmas.

Here's what's happening in November and December. We have a lot to do to get our cd "Past Due" through final mixdown and mastering so we have cut our performance schedule short this month. Still, here's where we will be:

November 8th - 8:30pm - Mariner's, Natchitoches, Louisiana, with our pals The Sidemen, James Wagley and Mickey Burton.
November 21st - 9pm - The Pineknot Music Show, Nacogdoches, Texas www.pineknotmusic.com
November 22nd - 7pm - Boogie On the Bricks, Natchitoches, Louisiana
December 5th - 8:30pm - Mariner's, Natchitoches, Louisiana
December 12th - 8:30pm - Mariner's, Natchitoches, Louisiana
December 27th - 7pm - Cane River Roaster's Coffee Shop, Natchitoches, Louisiana

Also, to be announced, our CD Release Party for "Past Due," watch for this announcement soon! Thanks to all of y'all for making the Hoodoo Papas so much fun. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Hey Hoodoo Papa fans -

Another busy month for the Papas just flew by. The “Papamobile,” my 1989 Ford Taurus wagon, just turned 310,000 miles and is still running strong from festival to festival. We traveled west to Grapevine, Texas, just north of Dallas for the Grapefest. If y'all haven't been to the Grapefest, mark your calendars for next year (second weekend in September) and go. It was great. Grapevine is a historic western town with a long main street lined with shops and old storefronts. The whole main street, over a mile long, had food booths, craft booths, and - best of all - wine tasting booths. The Grapefest celebrates the nearby vineyards and the wineries that produce some excellent Texas wines. Wines from all over the world were presented in the International Pavilion as well. Five music stages and a large carnival with Ferris wheel and other rides make this a must see three day event. Our Mojo wasn't working too well the day we arrived. Rain, rain, and more rain. Nevertheless, the show went on to a dedicated crowd of music fans including our friends from Shreveport and Dallas, the Hinton family, who came with their grandkids. Thanks for being there.

On Saturday, the 20th, we performed at the first annual Natchitoches Meat Pie Festival. Natchitoches (our hometown) is the oldest town in the Louisiana Purchase with brick streets overlooking beautiful Cane River. The Natchitoches meat pie is a fried or baked pastry shell filled with spicy ground meat. Over 8,000 meat pies were sold during the two-day fest so they have to be good. There was a meat pie-eating contest featuring a "professional eater," who won by consuming 22 pies in 10 minutes. He was actually disappointed with his performance since the day before he "practiced" and ate 32! Jesus Jones that's a lot of ground meat! We had a ball - didn't eat a meat pie (as natives, we get them all the time), but I tried a meat pie po'boy which was excellent. Y'all come next year for a meat pie good time and some great music.

Rick and I have been putting the fine touches on our new CD project at Sandbox Studio. Things are moving along. We have about six or eight new songs to record before we compile the song program. With a bit of luck, we should have the CD out by December 1st, just in time for Christmas. Of course there will be a CD release party, so stay tuned for more details. If any of you want to sample a few songs that we have completed, we are offering four (4) pre-release CD samplers of five songs each for only $5 each. Just email us tworicks@hoodoopapas.com and we will send you info on purchasing. The only thing we ask is that you give us a critique of the songs - like which ones you like best and which ones you hate. We appreciate your input.

Speaking of things to buy, we now have Hoodoo Papa t-shirts available for only $15 each - extra large sizes only. A picture will be posted on the website www.mojohat.com soon. Also, the Hoodoo Papas are now producing our own special blend of gourmet coffee - "Hoodoo Brew" - that will be available on the website as well for $2.50 a bag. Each bag makes one 12-cup pot of excellent gourmet coffee (that's less than 25 cents a cup) and you can only get it from the Hoodoo Papas. Keep up you caffeine quota and support the Papas.

Here's where we will be in October and November so far, but things are changing rapidly so stay tuned to our website www.hoodoopapas.com for additions to our schedule.

October 4th - 1pm - El Dorado Musicfest, El Dorado, AR
October 11th - Noon - The Red River Revel, Shreveport, LA
October 25th - 11:30 am - Leesville Frontier Days, Leesville, LA
October 28th - 4:30 pm - Arkansas Quarter Celebration, Murfreesboro, AR
November 8th - 8:30 pm - The Cove at Mariner's, Natchitoches, LA with our special friends The Sidemen, James and Mickey on bass and drums
November 21st - 9 pm - Pineknot Music Co-op, Nacogdoches, TX
November 22nd - 7pm - Boogie On The Bricks, Natchitoches, LA with the Sidemen

We hope to see you all there. We will have CDs, t-shirts and coffee so come get some neat stuff and hear some great original music.

Stay tuned for more from the Two Ricks - The Hoodoo Papas. Thanks for your support.

Hoodoo News #1 September 2003

Greetings all Hoodoo Papas fans.

This is the first installment of our new monthly communiqué all about the Hoodoo Papas. Please let us know if you like it. If you do, forward it to your friends and invite them to join our fan club. Just send an email to tworicks@hoodoopapas.com.

Important Info: All email addresses we collect absolutely stay with the Hoodoo Papas. We will never sell, give, loan, or share your personal information, truly, never. If you do not want to receive the newsletter, just reply to this email with "remove" in the subject line.

You guys who have known us a while may notice that we have a new email address - tworicks@hoodoopapas.com . We also have a new web page www.hoodoopapas.com. Both of these were set up for our new Festival promotion campaign. The 'Papas' are concentrating all of our efforts on playing festivals throughout the Southeastern U. S. and Texas. The old email (mojohat@mail.com ) and website www.mojohat.com are still working, and will continue to be active, and can be used if you like. We still answer emails at the old address.

Now that all the business is out of the way, here's what we've been up to this past month. The Big News: Our song "One More Honest Partner" won first place in the New Traditions Song contest sponsored by Red River Radio and The Nacogdoches Americana Festival. Thank you, thank you very much.

Rick Seale, yours truly, was inducted (unlike deducted or impacted, this is better) into the Louisiana Folklife Center's "Hall of Master Folk Artists." I thought a person had to old to be "inducted" but I guess all you have to be is an "old fart." All kidding aside, I am very honored.

We have been recording our next album at Sandbox Studio in Shreveport, LA. Denise Grenhaw and Darren Osborne, the owners and engineers, have treated us wonderful, as usual, and we are having a great time. We have sixteen songs "in the can" so far with some new twists - drums and bass, plus some other surprises, including Brian Basco on piano - with about six or eight more to record. Then we will start the process of deciding which songs to put out now. We are considering letting y'all decide. What do you think of us sending out 2 or 3 songs at a time to download and you folks picking which ones you like? Then the most chosen twelve will be the next CD. Just an idea, let me know what you think.

We attended two music conferences in New Orleans: Cutting Edge Music Conference and World Association of Artists and Musicians (WAAM). Both were great. We learned a lot of stuff we already knew and some stuff we can actually use (does Newsletter come to mind?). We met some great folks from Rounder Records, Campedia Productions, Joyful Music Group and festival promoters from Mexico, Belgium and Italy. We had a great time, got caught in a two hour traffic jam, stayed with my kids, Jeremy and Lauren, and came home. Then we slept all day Sunday.

Despite the trauma, a new thing is coming out of our road trips. Rick Woodward, with his twenty-year-old tape recorder, is taping our insane and inane "road comments" as "On the Road with the Hoodoo Papas." Watch for details soon on how you can get a copy (as if you would want one, but who knows?)

Here's where we are going to be this month:

Sept 12 - Grapefest , Grapevine, Texas - 3:30 Budweiser stage; 6pm International stage
Sept 13 - Mariner's - Natchitoches, LA 8:30pm
Sept 20 - Natchitoches Meat Pie Festival - Riverfront Natchitoches, LA 3pm Main Stage
Oct 4 - El Dorado MusicFest - El Dorado, AR - 1pm
Oct 11 - Red River Revel - Shreveport, LA - 12 noon KTBS stage
Oct 25 - Leesville Frontier Days Festival - Leesville, LA - 11am

We hope to see ya'll at our next show. Stay tuned; stay connected. We'll talk to ya'll next month.

For copies of our CDs “Mojo Hat” or “Back Porch Blues” just email us at tworicks@hoodoopapas.com or go to www.mojohat.com and follow the links.
